Automatic sprinklers are a key component of any fire protection system, along with alarm systems, heat detectors, and portable extinguishers.
In multi-unit or multi-storey buildings — such as offices, commercial spaces, apartments, or condos — their efficiency can quite literally save lives.

At Guard-X, a fire safety leader in Montreal for over 75 years, our experts explain how automatic sprinklers work.

Automatic Activation

A sprinkler activates automatically when it detects a temperature of 155°F (around 68°C). It:

  • Senses heat through a heat-sensitive bulb or fusible link
  • Draws water from the connected pipe network
  • Sprays water directly onto the affected area to extinguish the fire at its source

In most cases, this is enough to extinguish the fire quickly or significantly slow its spread.

Targeted Activation: One Fire, One Sprinkler

Contrary to popular belief, not all sprinklers activate at once.

  • Only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates initially
  • If the fire continues, a second sprinkler activates, then a third, and so on

This gradual activation helps to:

  • Limit water damage
  • Avoid unnecessary flooding throughout the building
  • Provide an effective, localized response to small residential or commercial fires

Automatic Alert to Emergency Services

When a sprinkler is triggered, it immediately sends a signal to your fire alarm monitoring center.

The result? Firefighters are alerted instantly — often even before someone can dial 9-1-1.
This rapid response can make all the difference in an emergency.

Less Water Damage Than You Think

It’s a myth that sprinklers cause extensive property damage. In reality, they:

  • Stop the fire from spreading
  • Use much less water and lower pressure than a fire hose

It's far better for sprinklers to intervene early than to deal with major losses later.
